Van der Meyde to make Oranje debut against
U.S.A.

| Andy van der Meyde |
07 May: Andy van der Meyde will almost certainly become the
97th Ajacied to play for the Oranje, the Dutch national
team. The right winger was selected by national coach, Dick
Advocaat, for Holland's friendly game in Foxboro, MA, against
the U.S.A.
Van der Meyde is the only Ajacied in the squad. As usual,
the number of former Ajax players is significantly larger. Six
of them will be present in Foxboro: defenders Frank de Boer and
Michael Reiziger, midfielders Edgar Davids and Denny Landzaat,
and forward Patrick Kluivert.
This is Dick Advocaat's squad in full:
Goalkeepers: Waterreus (PSV), Westerveld (Real Sociedad,
Spain). Defenders: Frank de Boer, Reiziger (FC Barcelona,
Spain), Numan, Ricksen (Rangers FC, Scotland), Ooijer (PSV),
Stam (Lazio Roma, Italy). Midfielders: Landzaat (Willem II),
Davids (Juventus, Italy), Cocu (FC Barcelona), Zenden (Chelsea
FC, England), Sikora (Vitesse). Forwards: Van der Meyde (Ajax),
Kluivert (FC Barcelona), Van Nistelrooij (Manchester United,
England), Pierre van Hooijdonk (Feyenoord), Roy Makaay
(Deportive La Coruna, Spain).
Former Ajax players Marc Overmars, Edwin van der Sar and
Ronald de Boer had to turn Advocaat's invitation down due to
injuries.
Oranje played its first ever game in 1905. On
average, one Ajax player a year made his debut in the Dutch
national team. Gé Fortgens was the first one, on 19
March 1911. Andy van der Meyde is to become number 97 on 19 May
2002. (MP)
