Tom De Mul to return to Ajax in summer
30 March: Tom De Mul will be in the Ajax-1 squad for
the 2006-2007 season. The Flemish right winger (20) is
currently loaned out to Vitesse, where he made the progress
Ajax were hoping for. De Mul will finish the season with the
Arnhem Eredivisie side and then return to the Amsterdam
ArenA.
Tom De Mul (born Kapellen, Belgium, 04 March 1986) played
for Belgian outfits Kapellen and Germinal Beerschot Antwerp
before he was scouted by Ajax and entered the youth system of
De Toekomst. After a brief spell for Ajax A1 and Young Ajax he
made his first team début on 25 February 2004 in the
Eredivisie home game against NEC.
He started the 2004-2005 season with the Ajax-1 squad, but
dropped back to Young Ajax and spent most of the season with
the Ajax reserves. During the pre-season campaign for the
current season Ajax decided to loan the player out,
but underscored their faith in the young winger by
offering him a
contract extenstion until 2008. De Mul left for
Vitesse in August 2005 with 8 Eredivisie appearances (1
goal) behind his name, as well as 1 match
in domestic cup competition and 1 appearance in the
Champions League. For Vitesse he appeared in 23 Eredivisie
matches this season, in which he netted twice.
Ajax's technical director Martin van Geel said: "Tom had
developed well at Vitesse. He also became mentally stronger. He
has matured. It would have been nice if he'd played even more
games for Vitesse, but we think he can be a fully-fledged
first squad player now, who can seriously compete for the
position of right winger." (MP)
